Dr. Shelley Fried has begun a new collaboration with Dr. Chen Yang, PhD, Associate Professor in ECE from BU. Dr. Yang and her team are pioneering the use of optoacoustic stimulation as a way to stimulate retinal and other types of neurons. Recently, they have developed an approach that enables construction of massively parallel devices, offering the potential for high channel counts, each capable of focal activation. The project has recently been funded by the NIH/NEI with Dr. Yang as PI and Dr. Fried as Co-I. We will be further developing and testing the potential of optoacoustic technology and the high-channel count device for use as a new type of retinal prosthesis.
